Wienerschnitzel West Virginia Debuts Through GoMart Partnership
Wienerschnitzel enters West Virginia through a new GoMart partnership, opening co-branded Tastee Freez locations in Kanawha City and Ghent next summer.
Along a stretch of road in Kanawha City, West Virginia, drivers passing a familiar convenience store will soon notice something new rising beside the pumps, a red and white sign bearing a name that has fed generations of Americans from the West Coast outward. That sign belongs to Wienerschnitzel West Virginia, the hot dog chain's first entry into the state, arriving through an unlikely but increasingly common partner: a gas station.
GoMart has partnered with restaurant company Galardi Group to open Wienerschnitzel quick service restaurants at two of its convenience stores, according to an announcement shared with C-Store Dive. The new locations will debut in Kanawha City and Ghent, West Virginia, and will be co-branded with Galardi's Tastee Freez ice cream concept, giving guests a hot dog and soft serve stop within a single storefront. Full details on the brand itself are available on Wienerschnitzel's official website.
A Familiar Format in a New State
Both restaurants are being built as end caps attached to the existing convenience stores, complete with their own drive thrus, and are slated to open next summer. Ted Milburn, Galardi's director of franchise development, confirmed the timeline, framing the two locations as the opening step of a much longer relationship between the two companies.
GoMart is no stranger to hosting outside restaurant brands. The retailer, which operates 123 locations across West Virginia, Ohio and Virginia, already features brands including Little Caesars and Subway at some of its stores. That prior experience running quick service concepts alongside its core convenience business helped position GoMart as a fitting partner for Wienerschnitzel as the chain enters the state for the first time.
Why the Partnership Makes Sense for Both Sides
Phil Shuman, president of GoMart, explained the appeal of the new brand in terms that reach beyond a single storefront. "Wienerschnitzel/Tastee Freez brings a menu that has built a loyal following and a flexible restaurant model that can work across different types of locations, giving us an opportunity to bring something distinctive to our guests in Kanawha City, Ghent and additional communities in the future," Shuman said. The comment matters because it frames the deal not as a one time addition, but as a template GoMart intends to repeat as it identifies further sites.
For Galardi, the arrangement offers a way to expand Wienerschnitzel into nontraditional locations, a strategy the company has been actively pursuing beyond convenience stores alone. David Winter, chief development officer for Wienerschnitzel, pointed to what made GoMart a strong fit as a growth partner. "GoMart brings together many of the qualities we look for in a development partner, from strong operating experience and deep knowledge of its markets to an established footprint that creates opportunities for Wienerschnitzel to grow across different formats," Winter said. His remark underscores a broader shift in how legacy quick service brands are choosing to expand, leaning on partners with existing retail footprints rather than building standalone locations from scratch.
Room to Grow Beyond the First Two Stores
While only two locations are currently in development, GoMart has already identified additional opportunities to introduce Wienerschnitzel across its broader portfolio, including potential store conversions and new construction, over the next five years. Galardi, meanwhile, is looking beyond convenience retail entirely, eyeing military, travel and other high visibility environments that could introduce the brand to an entirely new set of customers.
Part of a Wider Shift in Convenience Retail
The GoMart and Wienerschnitzel deal reflects a trend that has been gaining traction across the convenience store industry throughout 2026, as chains increasingly look to quick service partnerships to turn fueling stops into genuine food destinations. Other convenience retailers that have added QSR concepts this year include Loop Neighborhood Market, BrakeTime Corner Market, Oxxo USA and Bolla Market, suggesting that the model GoMart is testing in West Virginia is becoming close to standard practice rather than an isolated experiment. It is a pattern not unlike the way hospitality venues elsewhere are finding new formats to reach guests, whether through a convenience store drive thru or, on a different end of the spectrum, a curated cocktail experience such as Amaru Restaurant Dubai's Negroni Week celebrations, each an example of an established brand finding a new way to meet its audience.
By next summer, the sign now rising beside the pumps in Kanawha City will mark more than a single restaurant opening. It will represent the quiet, steady logic behind so much of today's food service expansion, where the next hot dog stand is as likely to appear beside a gas pump as along a traditional strip mall, built less on spectacle than on the simple bet that people will stop wherever they already are.
