Avelo Airlines Records 1 Million Passengers at Wilmington Airport

Avelo Airlines celebrated its one millionth customer at Wilmington Airport on May 31, 2026, just over three years after launching its first flight from the Delaware facility on February 1, 2023. The milestone passenger arrived aboard Flight 560 from Orlando International Airport at 12:33 PM.

One million passengers through an airport most of the Philadelphia region had written off. That number deserves some context.

What Avelo Actually Built Here

Wilmington Airport was not a priority for any major carrier before Avelo arrived. Philadelphia International was the assumed answer for everyone in Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania, south Jersey and the Maryland shore, regardless of the traffic, the crowds, or the terminal walks. Avelo's bet was that proximity and simplicity could beat scale, and three years later the numbers support it.

From a single Orlando route in February 2023, Avelo now operates 11 nonstop destinations from ILG covering Florida, the Carolinas, Puerto Rico and beyond, more than 7,000 flights operated and 130 crew members based locally. The airline did not just add routes. It built a genuine alternative hub for a market that was underserved by design, not by accident.

The Reliability Number That Actually Matters

Avelo's growth story would mean little if the flights did not show up on time. In 2025, the airline ranked in the top three nationally for both on-time performance and flight cancellation rate, figures verified by Anuvu, the same data provider used by the Wall Street Journal for its annual airline rankings. For a young, lean carrier operating out of smaller airports without the infrastructure advantages of a major hub, that performance level is genuinely difficult to sustain.
