Brazil Could Lead Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel Supply, LATAM CEO Says

Brazil has the potential to become a global leader in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), according to the CEO of LATAM Airlines Group.

The country’s well‑established biofuel industry and abundant natural resources position it as a strong candidate to play a major role in supplying cleaner aviation fuels for the global airline industry.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is considered one of the most important solutions for reducing carbon emissions in air transport. SAF can significantly lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional jet fuel while remaining compatible with existing aircraft and airport infrastructure.

Brazil already has extensive experience producing biofuels, particularly ethanol derived from sugarcane, which could support the development of large‑scale SAF production. Industry leaders believe this existing expertise could help accelerate the transition toward cleaner aviation fuels.

The CEO of LATAM Airlines highlighted that supportive government policies, investment in production facilities, and collaboration between airlines, energy companies, and regulators will be critical to unlocking Brazil’s full SAF potential.

Airlines around the world are increasingly committing to sustainability targets and are looking for reliable sources of SAF to reduce their environmental impact. However, limited production capacity and high costs remain key challenges for the industry.

If Brazil expands its SAF production capabilities, it could become an important supplier not only for Latin American airlines but also for global aviation markets seeking sustainable fuel alternatives.
