Northern Jet Upgrades Heavy Jet Capacity With New Additions

Northern Jet added two Bombardier Challenger 604 heavy jets to its fleet on May 28, 2026, bringing its large cabin aircraft count to four. Both jets seat up to 12 passengers and are equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi, supporting the operator's push into longer-range private travel across North America.

Twelve months ago, Northern Jet had no large cabin jets at all.

How Fast This Fleet Has Grown

Northern Jet launched its first large cabin jet in January 2026. Since then it has added a Challenger 650 earlier this month and now two Challenger 604s, quadrupling its heavy jet presence in a single year. As of May 2026, the company also operates five super midsize Challenger 300 series aircraft, giving it a two-tier Bombardier fleet that covers both the super midsize and heavy jet categories without spreading across multiple manufacturers. 

The company's roots are in Learjet-based midsize regional flying, and its 2023 merger with SpeedBird was the pivot point, expanding it beyond Upper Midwest to Florida routes into a nationwide operation with guaranteed pricing and availability. The Challenger additions are the next chapter of that same story, moving the fleet upmarket to capture longer trips and larger groups that midsize jets simply cannot serve.

Why the Challenger 604 Specifically

The 604 is not the newest aircraft in the heavy jet segment, Bombardier replaced it with the Challenger 605 and later the 650, but it remains a commercially smart choice for a growing charter operator. Acquisition costs are significantly lower than newer alternatives, the type has a deep maintenance and parts network, and the cabin dimensions are genuinely competitive. With a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles and a stand-up cabin, the 604 comfortably handles routes like transatlantic city pairs that represent the top end of most charter clients' requirements. Northern Jet is not the only operator making this call in 2026, AirX in Europe and Luxaviation UK have both added Challenger 604s to their fleets in recent weeks, pointing to broad operator confidence in the type's commercial value right now. 

For Northern Jet, the math is straightforward. Heavy jet demand is growing and the company now has the fleet to capture it.
