MAHABALIPURAM, May 25, 2026: InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts' luxury and lifestyle portfolio, has unveiled the final chapter of its transformation, completing a multi-million-dollar overhaul of the 15-acre beachfront property on the East Coast Road. The reimagined resort opens with new luxury suites featuring plunge pools, an ocean-facing ballroom, five distinct dining and bar venues, a sports pavilion, and a meditation garden, setting a new benchmark for coastal luxury hospitality on the Coromandel Coast.

The relaunch is significant for more than its amenity count. The InterContinental brand has been operating for over 80 years and is the world's first and most global luxury hotel brand. Bringing that heritage to bear on a property directly inspired by the iconic Shore Temple of Mahabalipuram — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and placing it 60 minutes from Chennai International Airport, makes this relaunch one of the more considered and destination-anchored luxury openings in South India in 2026.

110 rooms and suites reimagined for beachfront living

The resort's 110 guestrooms and suites have been fully reimagined, offering views of landscaped gardens, the pool, and the Bay of Bengal. Premium in-room amenities, standalone bathtubs, and rain showers are standard across the range. The suite offering carries genuine distinction. The Grand Presidential Suite delivers ocean views with a jacuzzi and a steam room. The Presidential Suite includes a private pool and an exclusive spa room overlooking the Bay of Bengal. The Rathi Suite offers a plunge pool, steam room, and garden views, a quieter, more verdant counterpoint to the ocean-facing options.

These are not merely upgraded rooms. They are self-contained coastal sanctuaries, the kind that justify the journey for guests who are choosing Mahabalipuram as a destination in its own right rather than a day trip from Chennai.

Five dining venues that reflect global perspective and local sensibility

The resort's renewed dining lineup is among its most deliberate statements. Each venue has a clear identity and serves a different occasion.

The Melting Pot serves Indian, Western, and Pan-Asian cuisines across three interactive open kitchens, with indoor and alfresco seating overlooking the pool. KoKoMMo Tiki Shack occupies the shoreline, a beachfront bar and dining venue designed around artisanal cocktails, coastal food, and the particular quality of light that the Coromandel Coast produces at sunset. Tao of Peng brings a focused exploration of Hunan and Cantonese cuisine to the resort, the kind of restaurant that earns its own following beyond hotel guests. Viora Sky Lounge spreads across two rooftop levels with 360-degree views, running from sunset aperitifs through to elevated evening service. The Gatsby Lounge rounds out the five as a relaxed sports lounge with handcrafted drinks, live match screenings, and a billiards table, with adjoining alfresco seating available for private gatherings.

Five named venues at a single resort requires confidence. It requires a kitchen infrastructure, a staffing model, and a guest base that can sustain the range. At a property targeting celebrations, corporate gatherings, leisure breaks, and destination weddings simultaneously, the breadth is a feature, not a risk.

A venue infrastructure built for large-scale celebrations

The resort's events infrastructure is built around a simple principle: scale, by the sea. The Vaibhava Ballroom spans over 12,000 sq ft of ocean-facing venue space. The Vaibhava and Beach Lawns extend across 70,000 sq ft of landscaped grounds, courtyards, and pre-function areas. Together, the indoor and outdoor venues exceed one lakh square feet and can accommodate more than 5,000 guests.

For the destination wedding and large-format events market in South India, that combination, an ocean-facing ballroom, vast lawns, a named luxury brand, and five dining venues under one roof, changes what is available in the Mahabalipuram corridor substantially.

Wellness and activity: from meditation garden to ATV trail

Wellbeing is threaded into the property at every scale. Amrtam Spa delivers restorative sensorial therapies alongside a fully equipped fitness centre. The grounds include a Secret Garden, a Meditation Garden, nature trails, and a Herbal Garden and Juice Bar offering fresh wellness blends. For those who prefer movement to stillness, the sports pavilion includes a pickleball court, multipurpose play areas, and an ATV trail. Beachside yoga and sunrise meditation extend the wellness offering to the water's edge.

The range of options, from silent garden to ATV trail, reflects an understanding that a resort hosting families, honeymooners, corporate groups, and solo retreaters simultaneously needs to serve fundamentally different versions of what a restorative stay looks like.

What IHG's regional leadership said about the transformation

Sudeep Jain, Managing Director, South West Asia, IHG Hotels & Resorts, placed the relaunch inside IHG's broader commitment to luxury portfolio growth in India.

"The reopening of InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort marks an important milestone for our luxury portfolio in India. This multi-million-dollar transformation reflects our commitment to delivering destination-led, experience-rich stays that combine world-class hospitality with a strong sense of place. We are excited to welcome guests back to a reimagined resort that sets a new benchmark for mindful luxury on the Coromandel Coast."

General Manager Anand Nair framed the ambition that has guided the transformation from the inside.

"This relaunch marks a proud milestone for us, unveiling a truly transformed resort. Envisioned as a coastal icon reimagined, it brings together the richness of South Indian culture with modern luxury. Every space tells a story and each experience is thoughtfully curated to offer guests a more personal and elevated stay. Our ambition is to position the resort not merely as a place to stay, but as a destination in its own right."

— Anand Nair, General Manager, InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort

Location and IHG's growing luxury pipeline in South Asia

The resort sits on the scenic East Coast Road, 60 minutes from Chennai International Airport and moments from Mahabalipuram's UNESCO World Heritage monuments. The Coromandel Coast setting, casuarina groves, a private beach, the Bay of Bengal at the horizon, does the work that no interior design budget can fully replicate.

The Chennai Mahabalipuram relaunch joins IHG's global InterContinental portfolio of over 240 properties worldwide. In the region, the brand's pipeline continues to grow with InterContinental Pokhara Resort in Nepal and InterContinental Colombo in Sri Lanka both scheduled to open in the coming year, a signal that IHG is building depth in South Asia's luxury segment, not just presence.
