NMC Seals Nanking Restaurant Building Over Fire Safety Lapses

NAGPUR, June 12, 2026 — The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) today sealed the multi-storey building housing Nanking Restaurant in Civil Lines after finding repeated breaches of fire safety regulations and unanswered official notices.

Civic authorities from the Fire and Emergency Services Department reached the premises on Ravindranath Tagore Marg at around 11:00 a.m. and locked the entrance to the four-storey structure, which includes Nanking Restaurant on the ground floor and other commercial offices and eateries above it. The sealing follows a kitchen fire at Nanking on March 17 that exposed gaps in mandatory safety compliance, officials said. 

Nanking Restaurant Nagpur Locked After Safety Failures

The crackdown affects all occupants of the building, including Bejod Restaurant with Veggietude on the first floor, Ramteke Associates on the second, Refratherm International Pvt Ltd on the third and Oak Construction on the top floor. Chief Fire Officer Tushar Barahate, flanked by Sitabuldi police and the NMC anti-encroachment squad, led the operation under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006 (Amended 2023). 

The fire department issued the first detailed safety compliance notice on September 30, 2024, requiring installation of fire alarms, suppression equipment and clear emergency exits, records show. When those mandates were not met, a December 2024 notice declared the premises hazardous and instructed occupants to vacate, but tenants continued operating pending corrective work.

“This sealing action is necessary to prevent risks to life and property,” Chief Fire Officer Barahate said. The department also cited unauthorized construction of two extra floors beyond the original ground-plus-three approval, a concern raised by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court earlier this year. 

Civic officials warned that similar enforcement could follow for other establishments failing to meet fire prevention norms ahead of the monsoon season. Local residents applauded the move as overdue, while restaurant patrons expressed frustration about the closure of a long-standing dining venue.
