OAK BROOK, Ill., June 5, 2026 — Portillo's (NASDAQ: PTLO) has announced plans to open a flagship restaurant at 304 North Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago the brand's first inline location in the city and a milestone that brings the Chicago-born chain to the street it has never called home in more than six decades of operation. The 5,500-square-foot restaurant, situated at the corner of North Michigan Avenue and East Wacker Place within walking distance of Millennium Park and Navy Pier, will seat nearly 100 guests and offer dine-in, pick-up and delivery service.

The Portillo's Michigan Avenue location will become the fourth Portillo's restaurant in the city of Chicago and the 45th in the greater Chicagoland area. The announcement marks the latest step in a growth strategy that has seen the brand open an airport location at Dallas Fort Worth on May 27 and pursue smaller-format inline prototypes designed for high-foot-traffic urban environments.

Portillo's Michigan Avenue Restaurant Brings Iconic Menu to Downtown Chicago

The new location will serve the full Portillo's menu, including Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago-style hot dogs, char-broiled burgers, fresh-tossed salads, and the brand's widely recognized chocolate cake and cake shakes. The menu has remained central to Portillo's identity since founder Dick Portillo opened a small hot dog stand in Villa Park, Illinois, in 1963 a trailer he called The Dog House with $1,000 and no running water.

The Michigan Avenue site positions Portillo's directly in the path of the millions of tourists, office workers and residents who move through one of Chicago's busiest commercial corridors each year. The location sits just south of the Magnificent Mile and near two of the city's most visited landmarks, giving the brand exposure to both domestic and international visitors who may not have encountered Portillo's during its decades as a predominantly suburban operator.

Brett Patterson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Portillo's, framed the opening as both a homecoming and a strategic move.

"Chicago is where the Portillo's story began, and opening in the heart of the city is not only an incredibly proud moment for our brand, but also a recognition of how important Chicagoans are, not only to our history, but to our future. Michigan Avenue is one of the most iconic destinations in Chicago. This restaurant celebrates our hometown and reinforces a simple truth: no matter how much we grow, Chicago will always be at the heart of who we are."

Inline Restaurant Format Drives Portillo's Urban Growth Strategy

The Michigan Avenue location represents only the second inline restaurant in Portillo's history. The brand built its footprint primarily through large, freestanding drive-thru locations in suburban markets a format that served it well across Chicagoland and in newer markets including Arizona, Texas and Florida, but that does not translate to dense urban environments where land costs and building constraints make standalone construction impractical.

The inline format a restaurant embedded within a continuous row of street-level retail storefronts opens urban markets that were previously inaccessible to the brand. Portillo's appointed Jennifer Pecoraro-Striepling as Chief Development Officer in March 2026 to lead real estate strategy and prototype design, a hire the company described at the time as central to accelerating its growth agenda.

The Michigan Avenue prototype follows the brand's May 27 debut at Dallas Fort Worth Airport another non-traditional, high-footfall format that Portillo's characterized as a small-format concept targeting traveler traffic. Together, the two 2026 openings signal the brand's intent to test formats beyond the suburban freestanding model that defined its first six decades.
