Avianca Brings Lie-Flat Business Class to New York on August 4, and Its Abra Group Partner Just Beat It There

Avianca will launch its INSIGNIA lie-flat business class on Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights between Bogotá and New York JFK from August 4, 2026. The airline currently operates three daily flights on the route using a mix of A320-family and 787 aircraft, with INSIGNIA available exclusively on the 787-operated departures. Abra Group partner GOL already beat Avianca to New York with its own INSIGNIA cabin, launching three weekly Rio de Janeiro-JFK flights on July 8.

Two Latin American carriers from the same parent group are now competing for New York premium passengers simultaneously. That is either a coordination problem or a deliberate market play, and the timing suggests the latter.

What INSIGNIA Actually Offers

The product runs on Safran Cirrus lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, meaning every business class passenger has direct aisle access, the layout that has become the baseline standard for any carrier serious about the premium transatlantic market. The seats recline fully to 180 degrees, and Avianca markets the cabin with chef-curated dining, a Mola Sasa amenity kit featuring Loto del Sur products, unlimited snacks, a curated wine and spirits selection, and individual seatback entertainment screens. On the ground, INSIGNIA passengers receive dedicated check-in in Bogotá, lounge access, priority boarding, two checked bags and fast track at select European airports.

The product already operates on Avianca's European routes to Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and London. New York is its first North American application, and notably, Avianca is also fitting new business class seats on its 787-8 fleet from September 2026, meaning the New York product will improve further within weeks of the August 4 launch.

The Abra Group Premium Push

Avianca calls itself New York's largest international operator, running more than 90 weekly flights across eight routes from the city. Adding lie-flat capability on the Bogotá corridor targets the premium end of a market that has historically been dominated by American Airlines, United and LATAM on the US-Colombia corridor. The competition is not just inter-airline, it is intra-group. GOL's INSIGNIA by GOL cabin on the Rio-JFK route launched on the same week Avianca announced its own New York INSIGNIA rollout. Both airlines, both owned by Abra Group, both INSIGNIA-branded, both going after New York premium passengers.

That is not a coincidence. Abra Group is building a coordinated premium strategy across Latin America's two largest aviation markets simultaneously, using a shared brand identity to punch above the individual weight of either carrier. For premium passengers flying between North America and South America, the message is deliberate, you no longer need to choose a European or Middle Eastern carrier to get a lie-flat seat on this corridor. Latin America's own carriers are now ready.

The seats open for sale now. The first flight goes August 4.
