IndiGo Manchester Route to Be Suspended From August 31 Amid Rising Costs

IndiGo will suspend its Manchester route from August 31 after rising operating costs made the service commercially challenging. The airline cited international airspace restrictions, higher aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, Middle East geopolitical tensions, and foreign exchange volatility as key factors behind the decision.

The IndiGo Manchester route was one of the airline's first long-haul services operated using leased Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways. Despite strong passenger demand, longer flight times and increasing expenses have significantly impacted route economics.

IndiGo Manchester Route Impacted by Airspace Restrictions

According to IndiGo, prolonged international airspace restrictions have increased flight durations and fuel consumption. Combined with elevated ATF prices, these factors have pushed operating costs higher.

The airline said the decision is based on operational and economic considerations rather than weak demand. Passenger response on the Manchester route has remained encouraging since its launch.

Boeing 787-9 Fleet Adjustment After Route Suspension

As part of the network adjustment, IndiGo will return one of its six leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The aircraft were introduced to support the airline's long-haul expansion plans before the arrival of its Airbus A350 fleet.

However, IndiGo confirmed that the remaining Boeing 787-9 aircraft will continue operating on international routes. The airline stressed that the Manchester suspension does not signal a retreat from long-haul operations.

London Heathrow and Amsterdam Flights Remain Unchanged

IndiGo's services to London Heathrow and Amsterdam will continue as scheduled. Flights from Mumbai and Delhi to London Heathrow, along with Mumbai-Amsterdam services, remain part of the airline's international network.

The carrier reiterated that the suspension affects only the Manchester route and does not change its broader international growth strategy.

IndiGo Continues Long-Haul Expansion Strategy

The airline has recently adjusted capacity across its network by reducing some domestic flights and increasing international frequencies. Additional capacity is being directed toward markets where operating conditions are more favorable.

While the IndiGo Manchester route will be suspended from August 31, the airline said it may reconsider the destination in the future if costs and operating conditions improve.
