Portman Acquires Atlanta’s Landmark Westin Peachtree Plaza
Portman acquires the iconic Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, expanding its hospitality portfolio ahead of the 2028 Super Bowl.
ATLANTA, Georgia, May 26, 2026 — Portman has officially acquired The Westin Peachtree Plaza, one of Atlanta’s most iconic hospitality landmarks, through its Portman Hospitality Fund I.
The 1,073-room full-service hotel was sold by Marriott International, which will continue operating the property under a long-term management agreement.
Historic Atlanta Hotel Joins Portman Hospitality Portfolio
The acquisition marks the first purchase under Portman Hospitality Fund I, an investment platform focused on value-add hospitality assets across major U.S. markets.
The addition of The Westin Peachtree Plaza expands Portman’s hospitality portfolio to eight hotels across five key American markets, totaling more than 4,000 guestrooms.
The property carries historical significance for Portman, as the hotel was originally designed and developed by the company’s founder, architect John Portman Jr.
Rising 73 stories above downtown Atlanta, the cylindrical tower opened in 1976 and was once recognized as the tallest hotel in the world.
Major Renovation Planned Ahead of 2028 Super Bowl
Portman plans to renovate and reposition the landmark hotel as part of its long-term hospitality strategy.
Future upgrades are expected to focus on guestrooms, public spaces, meeting facilities, and guest experience enhancements ahead of the 2028 Super Bowl, which Atlanta is preparing to host.
The hotel previously underwent a major $70 million renovation completed in 2014, modernizing guestrooms, dining areas, and lobby spaces.
The skyscraper includes a seven-story podium featuring a large sky-lit lobby, conference facilities, fitness amenities, ballrooms, and a revolving rooftop restaurant overlooking the Atlanta skyline.
Atlanta Hospitality Market Continues Strong Growth
The acquisition comes during a period of strong hospitality and tourism expansion across Greater Atlanta.
Atlanta is preparing to host eight matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside future large-scale sporting and entertainment events, driving demand for hotel development and upgrades.
Industry reports indicate that more than 1,900 hotel rooms were under construction across the Atlanta metropolitan area during the first quarter of 2026.
The Westin Peachtree Plaza occupies a prime location within Atlanta’s business and entertainment district near major attractions including Mercedes-Benz Stadium, State Farm Arena, the Georgia World Congress Center, and the Centennial Yards development.
Hospitality analysts say major event-driven tourism and convention demand continue fueling hotel investment activity across Atlanta’s urban core.
