CAPE TOWN, June 4, 2026 — Amura by Ángel León, the seafood-focused tasting menu restaurant at the Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel in Cape Town, joins 15 other venues from across the globe on the Prix Versailles 2026 World's Most Beautiful Restaurants list, making it the only South African entry in this year's selection.
The Prix Versailles announced its 12th annual restaurant selection on June 1, 2026, in collaboration with UNESCO in Paris. The 16 winning venues span Hong Kong, Dubai, Vienna, Gstaad, Helsinki, Beijing, Beverly Hills, London, Cairo, Monaco, Los Angeles, Coral Gables, Pune and Cape Town a list that places Amura in direct company with some of the most design-driven dining spaces on the planet.
Amura Cape Town Recognized for Design Rooted in the Cape Coastline
Amura opened at the Mount Nelson Hotel in December 2025, just six months before earning the Prix Versailles recognition. South African interior architect Tristan du Plessis designed the space, drawing inspiration from the convergence of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans at the Cape coastline.
Deep green hues, woodwork and bronze details define the interior, with an open-plan kitchen at the theatrical center of the dining room. Du Plessis wove the textures, colors and natural character of the local coastline into every surface, creating a space that reads as an extension of its geographic setting rather than a departure from it.
Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, said each of this year's winning venues reflects a decor in perfect harmony with its environment and its menu a philosophy the Amura design embodies directly.
Ángel León Brings His First Restaurant Outside Spain to Cape Town
Chef Ángel León, widely recognized in the culinary world as the Chef of the Sea, built his reputation at his six-Michelin-starred restaurant Aponiente in Cádiz, Spain. Amura marks his first restaurant venture outside Spain, and he chose Cape Town as its home.
At Amura, León guides guests through a tasting menu that frames Cape Town's marine flavors through a Mediterranean lens. The menu celebrates the biodiversity of the ocean surrounding the Cape, with León applying the techniques and philosophy that earned Aponiente its international standing to an entirely new coastal terroir.
The restaurant is not new to global recognition. Earlier in 2026, Amura earned a place on TIME magazine's World's Greatest Places of 2026 list its second major international accolade in under a year of operation.
Prix Versailles Evaluates Architecture, Design and Cultural Identity
Now in its 12th edition, the Prix Versailles is one of the world's most closely watched architecture and design award series. It covers categories including airports, hotels, museums and restaurants, with each year's selections announced in collaboration with UNESCO.
The award does not evaluate food or service independently. Instead, it focuses on spaces where design, cultural identity and sustainability converge to create environments that enhance the dining experience as a whole. Three of the 16 restaurants named in 2026 will receive additional World Titles later this year: the Prix Versailles, the Interior Award and the Exterior Award.
Other prominent entries on this year's restaurant list include Nobu One Za'abeel suspended 100 metres above Dubai's skyline, Carbone's European debut inside the former United States Embassy in London's Mayfair, Finlandia Bistro inside Alvar Aalto's landmark Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, and two Maison Dior restaurants in Beijing and Beverly Hills.
Cape Town's Fine Dining Profile Continues to Grow Internationally
Amura's Prix Versailles recognition arrives as Cape Town's dining scene draws increasing attention from international award bodies. Earlier in 2026, FYN Restaurant in Cape Town claimed the top prize at the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards, with judges citing precision, creativity and balance as defining qualities of the city's gold-standard dining experiences.
Amura's achievement earning two global accolades within its first six months of operation points to a venue that opened with both a defined culinary identity and a design language strong enough to compete at the highest international level. For Cape Town's hospitality sector, it reinforces the city's standing as a destination where world-class food and architecture increasingly share the same address.
