PORTLAND, Ore., June 4, 2026 — El Porvenir Family Taqueria, a family-owned taco restaurant on Southeast 82nd Avenue known for its $1 tacos and loyal neighborhood following, temporarily closes after a fire damaged the building early Wednesday morning, leaving the owners facing a repair timeline of several months.

Flames broke out around 6:30 a.m. on June 4, before the restaurant opened for the day. Owners Jesus Zacarias and Mariela Lazaro were at home sleeping when the fire started. Portland Fire & Rescue investigators are working to determine the cause.

El Porvenir Family Taqueria Fire Starts Outside, Spreads to Roof and Kitchen

Fire officials say the blaze began on the exterior of the building before spreading inside and reaching the roof. Firefighters cut a large hole in the roof to allow heat and smoke to escape more quickly. Most of the damage concentrated in the kitchen the heart of the taqueria's operation.

For Zacarias, who opened El Porvenir with his wife roughly four years ago, the sight of the damage hit hard. "It's hard for me since I started here, and seeing this gone for me until I don't know when, it's just breaking me down," Zacarias said.

The couple's three young daughters have grown up around the taqueria, which has served as both the family's primary source of income and a second home. "It's devastating. Our 3-year-old already knows the taqueria was on fire. She saw the pictures and videos and said, 'No more tacos!'" Zacarias said.

SE Portland Community Rallies Around Beloved $1 Taco Spot

El Porvenir built its following in Southeast Portland through a combination of accessible pricing and consistent quality. The taqueria's $1 tacos drew a broad and regular customer base, and regulars wasted little time showing up both in person and online after news of the fire spread.

"A lot of people love this place. It's sad to see it like this," said a supporter named Maggie at the scene. Another customer, Sumayah, was equally direct about her intentions: "They're so affordable. I'll be back, you know I'll be back. Come support them!"

Discussions with insurance companies are in the early stages and repairs have not yet begun. The family says reopening could take several months, depending on the extent of the work required and the outcome of the insurance process.

Family Launches GoFundMe as Rebuilding Begins

As the Lazaro-Zacarias family navigates repairs and insurance, they have launched an online fundraiser to help cover costs and speed the path back to reopening. The GoFundMe campaign draws directly from the community support that has surrounded the taqueria since the fire became public.

El Porvenir Family Taqueria opened approximately four years ago and quickly established itself as a neighborhood fixture in Southeast Portland's 82nd Avenue corridor, a stretch of the city long known for its concentration of family-run restaurants serving immigrant communities. The "Closed" sign now posted at the entrance a single word has struck customers as a symbol of the interruption rather than an ending, with supporters expressing confidence the taqueria will return.
