GUWAHATI, June 19, 2026 — Assam police arrest two individuals in an extortion case linked to a dispute at a Zoo Road restaurant, and efforts continue to find a third suspect.
Guwahati police apprehended Suman Ali and Sujat Hakim after a complaint from the management of a restaurant on Zoo Road triggered an investigation into alleged demands for money in exchange for resolving a conflict, authorities said.
Extortion After Food Dispute Leads to Arrests
The case began on May six when a customer reported finding a cockroach in a plate of chicken biryani served at the Delhi Darbar eatery on Zoo Road, according to police. The incident sparked a confrontation between the customer and restaurant staff that required police intervention to defuse tensions.
Following the initial dispute, two men and a third unnamed individual approached the restaurant staff and offered to “settle” the matter by using their contacts in law enforcement, journalists and food safety officials, police said. The group allegedly demanded a payment to mediate the issue.
Investigation Details and Charges
Police said around ₹62,000 was transferred through an online payment as part of the alleged settlement agreement. After receiving the amount, the group left the location, officials added.
Responding to a formal complaint lodged at Geetanagar Police Station, investigators traced and arrested Ali and Hakim on suspicion of extortion. A third suspect, identified as Karan Sunny, remains at large as police pursue leads, the statement said.
Why the Case Matters
Police officials noted that extortion linked to disputes in commercial settings undermines public trust in the legal system and can escalate into wider criminal activity if left unchecked. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the full extent of the alleged scheme and locate additional suspects.
Further updates are expected as authorities continue their inquiry.
