PUDUCHERRY, June 09, 2026 — A consumer court has ordered a restaurant to provide ten free biryani plates over five Sundays after a customer discovered a dead insect in his meal, underscoring growing enforcement of food safety standards in India.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Puducherry ruled that serving contaminated food amounts to a deficiency in service under the Consumer Protection Act. The commission held that the restaurant must pay the complainant compensation and provide free biryani as restitution.

Consumer Rights Highlighted After Food Safety Breach

The case began when P. Sundarakumara Manikandan and a friend dined at a local eatery and found a dead insect in a plate of biryani in December 2025. The complainant documented the incident with photographs and video recordings, then sought legal remedies after the restaurant failed to address his concerns.

The commission found that the restaurant did not contest the proceedings and noted an inconsistency in its public and legal responses. Citing the evidence, it ordered the eatery to pay Rs. ten thousand in compensation for mental distress and an additional Rs. three thousand for litigation costs.

Unusual Restitution Includes Weekly Free Biryani

In addition to financial compensation, the commission directed the restaurant to supply the complainant with ten plates of freshly prepared Hyderabadi chicken biryani free of charge. The food must be delivered at two plates per week on five consecutive Sundays, beginning within two weeks from the order’s receipt.

Legal experts say the decision highlights the importance of consumer rights and food hygiene, sending a message to food service providers to maintain high standards. The restaurant has not publicly responded to the commission’s order at this time.
